Targeting an audience

Movie companies aim different films and artists at different target audiences. They do research to help them find out what people want to see and how to market their films and other promotional material.

How?

They also just talk to people. Researchers may set up test screenings to gauge audience reaction to a film - you can’t exactly do this nut you can gauge ideas, get initial reactions and show your plans to people and see what they think.

The audience bring many things with them rather than just age:

·         Culture

·         Attitudes

·         Education

·         Emotions

·         Knowledge

·         Expectations

Use of mise-en-scene in Thriller movies

Lighting and Titles



The lighting in a thriller tends to be low key lighting to create suspense and atmosphere. It alos creates fear and tension. In some cases though it tends to be bright (e.g. the Psycho shower scene). Black and white lighting is used as well to make shadows and makes them more intense.

The titles can be used in effective ways as well by using colours to match the film/emotions. For example dark colours and grey could show confusion or uncertainty. While black and white titles could portray that this film is something to do with police or a Noir Thriller.

 

 

Costume and Make-Up

The costume and make-up tend to be very realistic and natural as how we present the characters is how the audience will perceive them. Also natural make-up etc will make the audience think that this is more believable unlike Horror films. Make-up can be used to display emotions e.g. smudged eye make up to show a woman has been crying. Costume can be used to show a profession of someone. For example long coats and hats may make the audience think they are an investigator or something to do with the police.

 

 



'No Country For Old Men' Analysis

The first few shots are long shots of vast landscape. This shows the audience how far out the people are. Its an establishing shot as it shows where the film is set. Also portrays how isolated it is.

This is an establishing shot and reinforces how lonely and alone this place is. Its setting the film up for us. Also there is a narrative over the top (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XTI5GBqdMxo) and makes the audience confused and makes us ask questions. 

This shot shows two men - one a sheriff and the other is a hidden identity. This makes the audience wonder who this man is and why he is being arrested. Its a medium long shot and in it we can see a road that looks like it leads to nowhere so they are reinforcing isolation. 

This is a close-up of an air tank. This shot has been included to show that the air tank has some relevance. Its effective as it makes the audience wonder what its for and why its there. 

In this shot we can still not see the man's face so it builds up tension as its a hidden identity. It also makes the man mysterious in some way. It is a mid shot and shows the bad guy in the dark and the sheriff in the light.

This is a long shot of the road. Its effective as it shows that there is no-one around at all and shows that its very isolated. It makes the audience think about what would happen if something went wrong and makes them ask lots of questions.

In this shot we see the dark shadowy figure in the background. This shot gives the audience hindsight into whats going to happen next. It is also a mid shot.

This shot is from the floor angle and by doing this the audience see the chaos. Also by emphasising on the feet we see the struggle between the sheriff and the man. In this scene we rely on the sounds.

This is one of the first looks we get on the villain and how strange he looks. The audience get to see the struggle from a high angle and the emotions that are being portrayed.

This is one of the first close-ups of the villain and after the build up of tension we finally get to see his face clearly. The audience now know what they are dealing with.

In this shot we see how cool, calm and collective the killer is as though he's done it before. We also see what he'll go through to kill someone and how he doesn't mind hurting himself to be set free.

This shot is a very powerful shot. It shows the struggle that the sheriff and villain went through. The scratch marks show that the man was going to kill him regardless.

Again we see the oxygen tank being picked up. Makes the audience wonder why does he need this so much and what does it do. It shows the audience that he is threatening and this is a weapon.

'Se7en' Analysis

This is the first shot we see. Its of a range of orderly set out things to do with a profession. This shows that the character is good at his job and is professional. Its a close-up shot.

 This next shot is a medium shot of a dead body on the floor. We don't know what is going on and can't see very well as its dark and there's minimal natural light so its very mysterious. We can see what his job is now. 

This is a mid shot and shows the police tape which reinforces his job. Its a very dark, dirty setting. The chair in the corner shows its not a nice place and is quite seedy. 

This shot shows a younger man - bit more laid back. Not similar to the other character. He is clearly less inexperienced (the scruffy tie and leather jacket). This is a mid shot too. 

 This is another mid shot. Its shows the main character. Its a very serious shot and is dark and shadowy as well. His outfit is more like a typical detective (long coat and dark hat).

 This shot shows they work together as a team but not a lot of team work. Its dark and gloomy again - pathetic fallacy. It a mid shot as well as a two shot.

The metronome is further establishing the character and shows how he gets to sleep. This shows he's trying to filter stuff out and might not like his job. Too old for this anymore. Its effective in the film. 

These are the titles. They look at the killers record of how/what hes doing. Its dark once again and very mysterious.

The titles have very sharp music which reinforce the brutality of the murders. Still showing more and developing the murderers side.

This is outside and shows the setting of the place. Its dark and gritty once again. Establishes the place and time.

This shows the characters car and the lack of it. Its very ordered, neat and tidy. Its shows the role he has.

This a P.O.V shot of what the characters would see themselves through the torch light, but not there own P.O.V. We are almost detecting ourselves.

This is a mid shot and shows a grotesque image of a mans face down in spaghetti. This makes us question whats going on and builds up the story.

This shows the character and the struggle he is having to find out what is going on. Shows how difficult his job is.

This is a close-up of the hands tied together. We see through torchlight again and its almost like we are both detecting together. We are asking lost of questions.

This shows the character in his job and how serious it is. It shows how hes just getting on with it and is very determined. Its building up the story.

This shows the other person shining the flashlight at the man. Shows how inexperienced he is as he isn't helping just standing in the corner.
